Back to basics for better impact going forward – July 2025
Too often, we hear that going green is “too complicated and costly”, but this simply isn’t true. To really embrace sustainability and stop greenwashing, there needs to be a mindset shift in our industry.
Sometimes, the best way forward is to go one step back – to the basics. That’s why, on 8 July (in Cape Town) and 22 July (in Johannesburg), the Event Greening Forum (EGF) is bringing you a full-day workshop to reintroduce what sustainability means in the context of MICE (meetings, incentives, conferences, and exhibitions).
The workshop (featuring local case studies and step-by-step guidance) aims to debunk the myths preventing the industry from embracing greener practices, using the EGF’s Minimum Standards for Sustainable Events, and prove that it can be easy and cost-effective.
The response in the Western Cape has been phenomenal; Cape Town is already sold out – a clear signal that our industry is eager for actionable, accessible solutions to sustainability. Now it’s Gauteng’s turn! I call on our Johannesburg-based members, colleagues, and industry partners to help us fill every seat at The Forum, The Campus, and get those “SOLD OUT” signs up once again.
“Sustainability is no longer about doing less harm. It’s about doing more good.” – Jochen Zeitz
The workshops coincide with Plastic Free July, a global movement that encourages all industries to reduce their reliance on single-use plastic. The events sector remains a significant contributor to the plastic problem, and it’s time we changed that. We’re calling on all EGF members and our broader industry community to remember to “reduce, reuse, recycle, and repurpose” the amount of plastic we produce and consume.
Share your solutions and stories on our social media platforms; let’s learn from one another and inspire tangible ways to rethink and redesign our events with less waste, more purpose, and a lot more impact. Whether you’ve ditched plastic water bottles, switched to compostable packaging, or created clever reusables, we want to hear from you!
Every small step contributes to the greater shift.
