Member Spotlight: Ziad Khan from ZF Cleaning Services

Ziad Khan 300pxEach month we shine the light on an Event Greening Forum member who is making noteworthy achievements in their event greening efforts. This month we feature Ziad Khan, the Director of ZF Cleaning Services. Their services include event and exhibition cleaning, contract cleaning and construction cleaning.

Q: When and why did you start to develop an awareness about sustainability – and a desire to incorporate it into your business?

A: It started when we realised the sheer volumes of waste that an expo or event generates. The costs involved for waste removal, as well as the realisation of the waste compounds being filled at a rapid speed, has changed our mind set.

Q: Waste is such a critical component of greening an event. What services does ZF Cleaning offer to promote event greening?

A: Our focus is on promoting recycling. We have dedicated recycling bins placed around the event for awareness. We also try and educate and encourage visitors to use the correct bins.

We also see a trend of certain stand builders who use the venue as a dumping ground after there build or breakdown. This needs to change

Q: What are some of the common challenges you face in the events industry, when trying to promote more sustainable waste systems?

A: A lack of understanding and education about recycling from the general public. A “don’t care” attitude in certain public events by vistors. We also see a trend of certain stand builders who use the venue as a dumping ground after there build or breakdown. This needs to change, and stand builders need to be educated about the negative effects of increased waste left behind.

Q: And what advantages have you experienced from event greening?

A: The pleasure of creating JOBS, saving the environment and, yes, a cost saving of waste removal from venues.

Q: If you could, what one thing would you most like to change about the SA MICE events industry to make it more sustainable?

A: To be honest, for all stand building material waste to be kept to a minimum, as well as not dumping or leaving behind reusable products.
