Member Spotlight: Gill Gibbs from ConCept G

Every month we shine the light on an Event Greening Forum member who is making noteworthy achievements in their event greening efforts. This month we feature Gill Gibbs, the CEO of the ConCept G Group of Companies and a passionate environmentalist.

Q. WHAT IS YOUR ROLE AT CONCEPT G, AND WHAT DO YOU LOVE MOST ABOUT IT?
I am the CEO of the ConCept G Group of Companies, of which there are 5 companies in the fold. What I love most is sharing my knowledge, expertise, insight and experience, delivering exceptional projects to our clients, safely and as sustainably as possible, whilst training, developing and evolving our phenomenal team.

Q. WHEN AND WHY DID YOU PERSONALLY DEVELOP AN AWARENESS ABOUT SUSTAINABILITY, AND A DESIRE TO CHAMPION IT THROUGH YOUR WORK?
It stems from my childhood – I was always encouraged and educated to think of the environment. My mother is highly conscious about waste, and her approach and attitude towards sustainability is something to which I aspire. Similarly, our company ethos and culture revolves around the Butterfly Effect: one change impacts everything.
I am a Scuba diver and when you consider how waste in our oceans impacts just on that beautiful environment, it is disturbing and it evokes the need for change, also for the support of and subscription to those groups that are actively working towards sustainability.

If everyone starts with one small change, the required impact will be made and felt.

Q. CAN YOU SHARE WITH US ONE THING YOU HAVE LEARNT ABOUT EVENT GREENING, WHICH HAS BEEN INVALUABLE TO YOU.
I would say it is re-purposing and repositioning your mindset. Small steps towards the greater objectives. As far as possible, use what we have available, what is already existing and then make it work. If everyone starts with one small change, the required impact will be made and felt.

Q. TELL US ABOUT YOUR PROUDEST ‘GREEN’ ACHIEVEMENT, WHETHER A WORK PROJECT OR SOMETHING IN YOUR PERSONAL CAPACITY.
Project related, this would probably be the Siemens HR Universities Road Show – the stand was manufactured using repurposed pallets and was utilised over a three year period.
We have numerous clients that purchase their stands from us and we store and repurpose them where and when required.
Personally, our residential complex has implemented a recommended and professional recycling programme, which is a step in the right direction!

Every day poses a challenge in making sure that we all have the same approach and mindset. It’s about education and setting the benchmark. Leading from the front.

Q. WHAT IS THE BIGGEST CHALLENGE YOU’VE HAD TO FACE, WHEN PUSHING THE SUSTAINABLE AGENDA?
This question has to be applied to the present because we have the power now to take the necessary steps towards making the changes required. We cannot undo what has already passed, however we can make a vested stake in changing the future.
Every day poses a challenge in making sure that we all have the same approach and mindset. It’s about education and setting the benchmark. Leading from the front.
It is not simply about one element alone. We are faced with many challenges in our Industry. If you take into consideration all the SDGs (Sustainable Development Goals), they all have an impact on our industry. To mention some challenges in the context of our industry, industry innovation and infrastructure with respect to transportation, energy efficiency and also, technological progress and solutions. Responsible consumption, production and waste is a key challenge and also, strong institutions that speak to good business governance.

Q. SOMETIMES GOING GREEN CAN BE DISHEARTENING. WHAT MOTIVATES YOU TO KEEP GOING?
Every time you read an article or view images or footage showing the impact on the environment of operating unconsciously or irresponsibly, you are inspired to make changes and take action.

Q. IF YOU COULD WAVE A MAGIC WAND AND CHANGE ONE THING ABOUT THE SA MICE EVENTS INDUSTRY TO MAKE IT MORE SUSTAINABLE (SOCIALLY, ENVIRONMENTALLY OR EVEN ECONOMICALLY), WHAT WOULD THAT ONE THING BE?
All forms of transportation would make use of renewable and efficient energy.

Q. ANY FINAL WORDS YOU’D LIKE TO SHARE WITH OUR READERS?
Adjust our ways. We are all of us, far from perfect, however any, albeit small, change in the right direction will have a positive impact and there is strength and safety in numbers.
We must find the balance and adopt an attitude of quid pro quo.
